Vortex Generators are selectively placed by Master
Fin Designer Bob Evans on some Force Fin models to create counter rotating
vortices.
Underwater thrust is the meeting and continuance of counter rotating vortices.
Vortex Generators
do not create turbulence. To the contrary, turbulence is the water breaking
away from the fin's direction of travel.
The micro vortices created by Vortex Generators reattach the water
to the fin blade to increase the speed of water and limit turbulent flow.
They reduce your kicking effort and eliminate potential fin shutter you
may experience with long fins made by others.

Along the body of a
humpback whale
are selectively placed bumps.
These bumps act as "vortex generators" to break
the surface tension of the water.
